Is Ski Boot Fitting Important for Kids?

It is a common misconception that only adults and serious skiers can benefit from boot fitting ski services in Vancouver. But even kids who are just learning how to ski can benefit from wearing boots with the right fit.
Boot fitting Ski Services in Vancouver ensure that your kid will have the right boot fit for skiing needs. With the right fit, problems such as loose fit and too tight boots can be avoided. These are the things that can affect the comfort of a skier. Your kid will enjoy skiing better when he is using more comfortable boots.

The right boot fit can also avoid accidents. If your kid is still learning how to ski, a pair of boots with the right fit can help him maneuver better, thereby preventing accidents. It also prevents cold from settling in the toes, which often happens with an ill-fitting pair of boots. Injuries can also be prevented with the help of boot fitting. Foot and leg injuries are common due to ill-fitting boots as well as foot sores and blisters.
Boot fitting services are accessible these days. You can find boot fitters at stores such as The Destination Slope and Surf Outfitters. Visit this store before heading up to the mountains and have your child fitted with the right boots. You can also take advantage of other services such as size exchange program. This program lets you exchange current skiing gear for bigger ones once your child outgrows his skiing gear. Consider these services if your child is an avid skier.

4 Skiing Tips Beginners Should Keep in Mind

Skiing looks easy when you are an onlooker watching everyone from afar. But once you try the sport, you’ll soon realize that it’s actually not as easy as it looks. In fact, the learning process can be frustrating with the numerous bumps and falls you might suffer. But here are a few skiing tips by The Destination – Slope & Surf Outfitters that will help make things easier for you:

  1. Avoid looking at your feet.
As a beginner, you will do this quite a lot. You’ll inadvertently look at your tips to check its form and eventually lose your focus. If you lose downhill sight, there’s a chance you’ll get in an accident. Train your eyes to look 10 feet beyond your tips.
  1. Train with fixed lifts.
There are lifts that are too fast when coming at you. You might panic at the sight of an approaching lift and fumble with your skis while loading or unloading. Train with fixed lifts first as they are generally slower. Once you have adjusted and gained confidence in loading and unloading, you will eventually conquer the faster lifts.
  1. Bending your knees will give you more balance.
This also affords you more control, especially when taking uneven terrains.
  1. Keep powder off of your list in the meantime.
Yes, it’s the most exciting part of skiing but since you’re just getting started, stay away from it. The snow is heavier in powder so you are better off learning on trails that have been groomed.
Make sure you’re all properly geared up as well. Get the right ski gear at Ski shops in Vancouver. Find ski shops in Vancouver such as The Destination that also offers custom boot fitting services so you have comfortable proper-fitting boots when getting started with learning how to ski.

How to Avoid Frostbite in Children When Skiing

Children are actually more susceptible to frostbites. That is because they are not capable of holding on to body heat as adequately as adults. Additionally, many kids do not recognize their body’s limits. They might not feel the cold as much when they are having fun and might be reluctant to head indoors even if it’s needed.

When skiing, always think about the possibility of your kids getting a frostbite and take precautionary measures in preventing this from occurring.

Of course, making sure that your kids are properly garbed for the weather is important. Go to Vancouver ski shops such as The Destination to get skiing-appropriate clothes. These clothes are designed to withstand colder temperature. Make sure the clothes are water-proof. It’s also important to get proper footwear. The cold can seep in the feet of your kids. Use the right thickness of socks and boots that you can get from Ski shops in Vancouver BC.
Checking your weather app to determine wind chill can also be helpful. There are times when weather applications will predict a colder weather but when you go outside, it’s actually not as cold as it was predicted to be. Use your common sense as your guide.
Also take breaks from skiing. Avoid being exposed to the cold for a prolonged period of time. Make sure your kids go indoors and take a break or to eat before heading out again. Feed them with warm food and warm drinks to keep their body temperature high. You can enjoy a day out in the slopes without dealing with frostbites.

Snow Test Tips for Skiiers

Avalanche is one of the things skiiers should watch out for when engaging in this sport. Avid skiiers should not only equip themselves with the best safety gears from Best ski shops in Vancouver but should also acquire knowledge on how to test the snow for potential avalanche.

Here are some tests and tips:
  1. The Snow Pit Test
Dig a pit on a slope. Make sure the slope has the same position and angle that you intend to ski on. Dig up to 5 feet or until you reach the ground. Check if there are layers. Use a flat object like a card and scrape it on the wall of the hole you dug. If it catches, these are the hard layers. For the soft layers, run your gloved hands up and down the layer. If the layers are crusty or if there are significantly soft layers, don’t ski. Proceed in doing other tests.

  1. The Rutschblock Test
This uses force to determine the strength of a slope. Do this test after you have dug a snow pit. Widen the pit to fit the size of your ski. With the length of a ski pole and using a snow saw, cut the snow pit up the slope. While doing so, keep checking if the block breaks or if there are layers sliding off. Perform the R1 to R7 procedure. If the block breaks before you managed to do R5, you are skiing on unstable snow.

It’s also important to equip yourself with avalanche safety gear. Go to ski shops in Vancouver BC such as The Destination to get all the gear and equipment you need for skiing.
