Standup Paddle Boarding Tips for Beginners

Standup paddle boarding is a popular water activity in Vancouver. It’s fun and can also be a good workout.

It can be intimidating at first though if you have no experience using standup paddle boards in Vancouver but don’t worry because you will eventually get the hang of it with some practice. Here are some tips that will help beginners:

1. Learn the proper way of launching your paddle board

Carry your paddle board until the water reaches your knees. You don’t want to drag the board on the ground or it will damage the fins. Use both hands to hold the edge of the board and keep it stable while you go in a kneeling position in the center of the board. If you have a hard time staying on top of it in a kneeling position, you can just lie down on your stomach.

2. Follow the proper stance when standing up

Gently put one foot in a standing position. Use your hands to balance the board. Your hands should carry most of your weight so that it prevents the board from moving. Slowly raise your upper body until you are in a standing position. Make sure your knees are bent.

3. Learn some balancing tricks

Don’t look down. Always look straight ahead. Use your hips to find your balance and make sure you utilize your paddle as well. This can also support you while you are still in shallow waters.
